Origins

The 2023 libertad is the 42st release of the popular Mexican Silver Libertad series, which first started in 1982 and continues to be minted annually at La Casa de Moneda de Mexico, the oldest mint in North America. Mintages vary by year and are typically lower than most bullion counterparts, making them an extremely collectible coin.

Despite its relatively young age, the Mexican Libertad has become an important part of the nation’s history and is considered one of the finest silver coins in the world. The obverse of the coin features the country’s national eagle with the Angel of Independence depicted on the reverse.

The obverse of the coin originally featured a front-facing relief depiction of Winged Victory, an icon based on Roman designs that is depicted on the Centenario gold coins that were struck from 1921 to 1947 in celebration of Mexico’s independence from Spain. In 1996 a new version was introduced that featured a three-quarter side portrait of Winged Victory with a notched edge and the Mexican volcanoes Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl in the background field.
